Detachable bunk beds for kids are bunk beds that split into two separate single beds, making them a versatile, space-saving choice for siblings and family homes, especially in shared bedrooms. Children's bunk beds should also meet the highest safety standards, including UK EN-747 / BS EN 747 for safety, strength and durability. As a bunk, the top mattress should be no deeper than the maximum on the product page, usually 15cm, so the guard rail stays effective; high, continuous side rails on the top bunk help prevent falls. Sturdy ladders should be securely fixed and ideally have non-slip or wide flat steps, and practical safety features such as smooth, rounded corners also help. Once separated, either bed takes any depth. Children over four can use the bottom bunk, while only kids who can climb independently should use the top bunk, with toddlers needing parents’ supervision. Many detachable bunks are crafted to be rock solid and sturdy, with typical capacities up to 100kg, which suits older children and teenagers too.
The top bunk is for children aged 6 and over. When detached, the top bunk becomes a standalone bed using integrated legs or headboard or footboard posts, and to separate the beds you usually unbolt the frame or lift the top bunk off the lower bed, which is connected by metal pins, interlocking posts or bolted brackets.
