The right mattress for a bunk bed or high sleeper
Our three best-selling kids' mattresses are all 15cm deep and made in the UK, so they suit raised beds that take a 15cm mattress.
- Check the bed's maximum mattress depth first. You'll find it on the bed's page.
- Some raised beds take a continental single, 90 x 200cm, which is 10cm longer than a UK single.

Will it fit? Measure three things first
More than half of the people who've used our Bed Finder told us they were tight on space. Five minutes with a tape measure tells you which beds will work, before you fall for one that won't.

Ceiling height
Allow about 70cm between the top of the mattress and the ceiling so a younger child can sit up in bed, and 80 to 90cm for a teenager.

Wall length
Measure the full run of wall and note any windows, radiators and doors. Leave 50 to 60cm of clear floor in front of a ladder.

Floor space
Trundles, drawers and wardrobe doors need room to open. Allow about 90cm in front of the bed for a pull-out trundle.
Bunk bed and high sleeper safety, explained
The few things worth knowing before you buy a bunk bed or high sleeper, and how we apply them to the beds we sell.
- We only say a bed meets BS EN 747 where we hold the supplier's written confirmation.
- Check the age guidance and maximum mattress depth on the bed's page before you order.

Age for top bunks and high sleepers
Under BS EN 747, any bed with a base more than 60cm off the floor must carry a warning that it isn't suitable for children under 6. The bottom bunk has no age limit.
16cm
Guard rail above the mattress
The top of the guard rail should sit at least 16cm above the mattress. A deeper mattress cuts that, which is why raised beds have a maximum mattress depth.
15cm
A common maximum depth
Many raised beds take a mattress no deeper than 15cm, and some allow a little more. Always go by the figure on the bed's page.
70cm
Headroom above the top mattress
Allow about 70cm between the mattress and the ceiling so a younger child can sit up comfortably, and 80 to 90cm for a teenager.
BS EN 747
The bunk bed safety standard
The British and European standard for bunk beds and high beds. It covers strength, guard rail height, ladders and the gaps that could trap a child.
BS 7177
Mattress fire safety
Mattresses sold in the UK must meet the ignition requirements of BS 7177. Look for the fire label, and keep it on.

Delivery, sizes, returns and more, answered.
Can I choose my delivery date?
Yes, on many of our beds, mattresses and bedding. Add it to your basket and you'll see a Delivery Date box just above the checkout button. It fills in the earliest date, and you can choose a later one. For other beds, the delivery time is on the product page, and for some our delivery team will contact you to book a date.
Do you deliver everywhere in the UK?
We deliver to all mainland UK addresses. We can't deliver directly to Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly, but we can deliver to a mainland UK freight forwarder for onward shipping.
Can you hold my order until I'm ready?
Yes, for up to 4 months. If there's a Delivery Date box in your basket, just choose a later date. Otherwise, let us know when you'd like it after you order.
Can you build the bed for me?
On selected beds, you can add Room of Choice assembly on the product page: a two-person team brings the bed to the room you choose, builds it and takes the packaging away. For any other bed, you can book a local assembler through Taskrabbit once it has arrived.
Can I return a bed if I change my mind?
Yes. Tell us within 14 days of delivery, then return it within a further 14 days. Return costs are yours, and items returned unassembled in their original packaging get the fullest refund. If something is faulty, damaged or not as described, you can reject it for a refund within 30 days. Our returns policy has the details.
What age can a child sleep on a top bunk?
6 and over. That's the guidance for any top bunk, mid sleeper or high sleeper platform, and under BS EN 747, beds with a base more than 60cm off the floor must carry a warning that they aren't suitable for children under 6. The bottom bunk has no age restriction, and our toddler beds suit younger children.
How deep should a bunk bed or high sleeper mattress be?
No deeper than the maximum on the bed's page, which is often 15cm. The top of the guard rail should sit at least 16cm above the mattress, so a deeper mattress makes the rail less effective. Check the size too: some raised beds take a continental single, 90 x 200cm.
