About the Sterling
The Sterling Quad is a heavy-duty bunk bed with a double on top and a double below, so it sleeps four: two on each bunk. Made in Britain from Scandinavian pine, it's built for children, teenagers and adults alike, and it's rated for up to 25 stone (158kg) per sleeper, and no more than 50 stone in total across the bed. In a family home it takes siblings, cousins and a houseful of sleepover guests, and it's just as at home in a holiday let, guest house, hostel or B&B, anywhere that needs to sleep several people in one room.
The frame stays steady and rattle-free in daily use, with guard rails on the top bunk and a ladder with rungs 25cm apart. There's 29cm of clearance under the bottom bunk for low storage boxes, and when you'd rather have two beds than one bunk, the Sterling separates into two double beds. It's backed by a 12-year guarantee.
Choose a wood stain in Antique, Natural Oak, Chocolate, Mahogany or Black Ash, or have it painted in Farrow & Ball, the British paint maker known for its rich, heritage colours: Hague Blue, James White, Dove Tale, Nancy's Blushes, Dayroom Yellow, All White or Sage Green.
The Sterling Quad is made to order, with free delivery in 3 to 4 weeks. Once you've ordered, we'll be in touch to confirm whether you'd like the ladder on the left or the right. If you'd rather not build it yourself, add Room of Choice Assembly on this page before checkout. The delivery team build it in the room you choose and take the packaging away, so the bed is ready to sleep in the day it arrives.
It takes two mattresses, not four: a double (135cm by 190cm) on each bunk, or a small double (120cm by 190cm) on each if you choose the small double size. The mattress on the top bunk should be no deeper than 15cm. The top bunk is for children aged 6 and over. The MemoryDream 15 is the one we'd put on both bunks.

Room fit
The Sterling Quad needs 204cm of wall and 151cm out from the wall (136cm for the small double), plus clear floor in front of the ladder on whichever side you choose. It's 160cm high, so measure from where the top mattress will sit to the ceiling: allow about 70cm for a younger child to sit up, and 80 to 90cm for a teenager or adult.
Questions parents ask
Does it take singles or doubles?
Doubles. Each bunk takes a double (135cm by 190cm), or a small double (120cm by 190cm) on the small double size, so you need two mattresses and it sleeps four. The MemoryDream 15 is the one we'd put on both bunks.
Is it strong enough for adults?
Yes. It's rated for up to 25 stone (158kg) per sleeper, and no more than 50 stone in total across the bed. It's a heavy-duty bunk built for children, teenagers and adults, which is why it suits holiday lets, guest houses and hostels as well as family homes. The top bunk is for children aged 6 and over.
Can it be split into two beds?
Yes. It separates into two double beds, which is handy when the children want their own rooms or you'd rather have two guest beds.
Can the bottom bunk take a deeper mattress?
Yes. The 15cm limit is there for the guard rails on the top bunk. The bottom bunk isn't raised, so a deeper mattress is fine if you'd like more comfort. A deeper mattress does take a little headroom from the space under the top bunk.
