A low, safe-feeling first big bed. The Star Light Montessori Floor Bed is a low bed in solid pine with coloured side panels and a guard rail, so little ones can get in and out on their own and still feel snug.

Add the pull-out bed and it's ready for sleepovers too.

It's handmade to order in Belgium by Mathy by Bols, from PEFC-certified wood from sustainably managed forests. The solid pine frame is finished in a natural varnish and the panels are lacquered by hand in your choice of 26 colours, in water-based lacquer that meets EN 71-3, the European toy safety standard for paint. A matching touch-up stick comes with the bed.

It's suitable from age 3. Because it's made for your order, allow 3 to 4 weeks for delivery. It can't be returned as a change of mind, but faults and damage are covered in full. It comes ready for self-assembly.

It takes a UK single (90cm by 190cm), a continental single (90cm by 200cm), a small double (120cm by 190cm) or a continental small double (120cm by 200cm) mattress, depending on the size you choose. The mattress isn't included; the roll-up slatted base is. The optional pull-out bed takes a mattress up to 12cm deep: 90cm by 180cm under the 190cm beds, or 90cm by 190cm under the 200cm beds.

Room fit

The 90cm wide bed takes 209cm of wall and comes 98cm out from it, and it's only 41cm high, so it suits any room. With the pull-out bed, leave about a metre clear beside it to pull the second bed out.

Questions parents ask

What mattress does the pull-out bed take?
One up to 12cm deep: 90 x 180cm under the 190cm beds, or 90 x 190cm under the 200cm beds.

What age is it for?
From age 3. It sits low, with a guard rail, so it suits a child moving up from a cot bed.

Can I choose any colour?
Yes. The pine frame is varnished and the panels come in any of Mathy's 26 colours, all listed on this page at the same price. A fully painted or two-tone finish is available on request, so just ask.
