The bed part is the easy bit. The desk is where high sleepers get chosen badly.
Most listings tell you the bed's overall dimensions and say there's a desk underneath. They don't tell you how long it is, how deep it is, or whether a chair fits under it. Those three numbers decide whether your teenager actually works at it.
The three measurements that matter

For GCSE and A-level work, where a laptop and open books are both in use, 120cm is the practical minimum.
Desk depth
The one nobody lists and everybody needs.
- 50cm takes a laptop and nothing behind it
- 60cm takes a monitor at a comfortable viewing distance
- 70cm+ takes a monitor, a keyboard in front of it, and space to write
A monitor at 50cm depth sits too close, which is genuinely uncomfortable over a long session. If your teenager uses a screen rather than a laptop, this is the number to ask about.
Clearance above the desk
The underside of the bed is the ceiling of the workspace. Some high sleepers put it lower than you'd expect, and a monitor on a stand needs roughly 60cm of clear height above the desk surface.
Worth checking before ordering if there's any chance of a screen going under there.

Homework desk or gaming desk?
They're different requirements and it's worth deciding which you're buying for.

The chair is the thing people forget. A gaming chair is considerably wider than a standard desk chair and needs room to recline. Measure the space between the bed's uprights, not just the desk length.
The practical stuff
Power. Where's the nearest socket? A desk under a bed usually needs an extension lead, and it wants to be routed rather than trailing across the floor by the ladder.
Light. The bed above blocks the ceiling light, so the desk will be in shadow. A clip-on or desk lamp isn't optional, it's part of the setup.
Heat. A gaming PC under a bed in a small room gets warm. Worth leaving airflow around it.
Where the ladder lands. If the ladder comes down beside the desk, the chair and the ladder compete for the same floor. Some beds have a reversible ladder, which solves it. It's on the product page.
Two things that aren't about the desk
Ceiling height. Allow at least 2.3m so they can sit up comfortably on the bed. Measure directly above where it'll stand.
Mattress depth. Usually a 15 or 16cm maximum. Guard rails are designed to sit a set height above the mattress, and most high-street singles are 20cm or deeper. Our 15cm range is built for this.
