A standard UK double bed is 135cm wide and 190cm long (4ft 6in by 6ft 3in). It's 15cm wider than a small double and 15cm narrower than a king, and it's one of the most popular bed sizes in UK homes.
It's big enough for one person to spread out, and many couples share one happily. Whether it's right for you comes down to who's sleeping in it and how much room you have.

Continental and American sizes are different. A European (continental) double is 140 x 200cm: 5cm wider and 10cm longer than a UK double, so it needs a matching continental mattress. The American "full" is roughly 137 x 191cm, close to a UK double but not identical. Always go by the size stated on the bed, not just the name. Our kids' bed size guide covers every size in detail.
Is a double bed big enough for two?
It works for plenty of couples, but it's worth knowing the numbers. In a double, each person gets about 67cm of width, less than a single bed each. If either of you sprawls, runs hot, or is over about six foot tall, a king (150 x 200cm) gives noticeably more room and an extra 10cm of length.
For one person, a double is generous.
Who a double bed suits
Older teenagers. If the room allows, a double gives a teenager space to grow into, and a bed that will still work when they're an adult. In smaller rooms, a small double is often the better fit. See our beds for teenagers.
Single adults. Plenty of room to stretch out without the footprint of a king.
Guest rooms. Comfortable for a visiting couple, and it still leaves space for other furniture in a medium-sized room.
Couples in smaller bedrooms. Where a king simply won't fit, a double is the practical choice.
How much room do you need?
As a rough guide, a double bed sits comfortably in a room at least 2.5m wide and 2.6m long. That leaves about 70cm to walk down one side and past the foot of the bed, with space for a bedside table on the other side. For a couple who'll each want to get out of their own side, allow walking space on both sides. Measure before you buy, and allow for doors, radiators and wardrobe doors that need space to open.

What mattress and bedding do you need?
Mattress. A UK double bed takes a double mattress (135 x 190cm). If the bed is a continental size, you'll need a 140 x 200cm mattress instead. Browse our double mattresses.
Fitted sheets need to match the mattress size exactly, and a deep mattress may need a deep-fitted sheet.
Duvets. A double duvet (200 x 200cm) is the standard choice. Many couples go up to a king duvet (225 x 220cm) for more overhang and fewer arguments over the covers.
Pillowcases are standard size, and a double comfortably takes two pillows side by side.
