About the Ripley
The Ripley is a mid sleeper that fits a bed, a desk and plenty of storage into the footprint of one single bed. The bed sits up top, with rounded end panels, and underneath there's a chest of three drawers, an open shelf unit, more shelves built into the ladder end and a desk that rolls out when it's needed.
The desk is on castors. It pulls out from under the bed for homework, drawing or reading, and pushes back in when it's done, so the floor stays clear. Open shelves at the end of the desk keep books and pens to hand. The chest of drawers and the shelf unit are freestanding, so in a bigger room they can sit elsewhere and leave the space under the bed for something else. The ladder builds on the left or the right during assembly, and the bed builds in mirror image, so you can set it up to suit where the door and the window are.
It comes in white or grey, in laminated particleboard, with a solid base under the mattress. It's designed to meet BS EN 747, the British standard for raised beds. At 112.1cm high it sits low enough for most bedrooms, and the sleeping platform is for children aged 6 and over.
It takes a standard UK single mattress, 90cm by 190cm, no deeper than 15cm. That depth is a safety limit rather than a suggestion: a deeper mattress raises the sleeping surface and leaves less of the safety sides above it. The three mattresses shown above are the right size and depth for this bed, and the MemoryDream 15 is the one we'd put on it.
It arrives flat-packed in four boxes for self-assembly, with full instructions, and it's delivered free in 2 to 5 working days. The instructions allow about two and a half hours for two people. If you'd rather someone else built it, there's a link to book a local assembler below the returns policy.

Room fit
The Ripley takes 199cm of wall and comes 111.3cm out from it, and you'll need room in front of it to pull the desk out and open the drawers. At 112.1cm high it suits most bedrooms; allow about 70cm between the top of the mattress and the ceiling for a younger child to sit up, or 80 to 90cm for a teenager.
Questions parents ask
Can the ladder go on either side?
Yes. The ladder builds on the left or the right, and the bed builds in mirror image, so decide which side it goes before you start.
Does the storage have to stay under the bed?
No. The desk is on castors, so it pulls out for homework and pushes back under the bed when it isn't needed. The chest of drawers and the shelf unit are freestanding, so they can sit under the bed or elsewhere in the room.
Which mattress does it need?
A standard UK single, 90cm by 190cm, no deeper than 15cm. The MemoryDream 15 is the one we'd put on it.
Is there a matching bunk bed?
Yes. Prefer a bunk? The Ripley Bunk Bed is from the same range, in white or grey, with a pull-out trundle underneath, so it sleeps three.
