About the Ullswater
The Ullswater Mid Sleeper puts the storage on wheels. Underneath the bed there's a cupboard with two doors and two drawers, and an open unit with a hanging rail and shelves. Both sit on castors, so they can live under the bed or roll out into the room, and the space they leave behind becomes a den, a reading nook or somewhere to play.
The cupboard has shelves behind its doors and two drawers along the bottom. The open unit has a hanging rail for school uniform or the next day's clothes, with shelves beside it for books and boxes. Curved cut-outs at each end of the frame keep the space underneath open and easy to get into, and the angled ladder has deep, flat treads and hand-holds cut into the top of each side.
It comes in white or mid grey. The mattress sits on a solid base made of four panels rather than slats, and the bed is designed to meet BS EN 747, the British standard for raised beds. The sleeping platform is for children aged 6 and over.
It takes a standard UK single mattress, 90cm by 190cm, no deeper than 15cm. That depth is a safety limit rather than a suggestion: a deeper mattress raises the sleeping surface and leaves less of the safety sides above it. The three mattresses shown above are the right size and depth for this bed, and the MemoryDream 15 is the one we'd put on it.
It arrives flat-packed in four boxes for self-assembly, with full instructions, and it's delivered free in 2 to 5 working days. The heaviest box weighs 38kg, and the instructions call for two people to build it. If you'd rather someone else built it, there's a link to book a local assembler below the returns policy.
Need a desk as well? The Ullswater High Sleeper is the same design taken up to 181.3cm, with a desk, three drawers and a wardrobe underneath.

Room fit
The Ullswater Mid Sleeper takes 198cm of wall. It comes 95.6cm out from the wall, or 129.2cm at the ladder end, and you'll want space in front of it to roll the cupboard and the open unit out and open the doors and drawers. At 136.6cm high it suits most bedrooms; allow about 70cm between the top of the mattress and the ceiling for a younger child to sit up, or 80 to 90cm for a teenager.
Questions parents ask
Do the storage units have to stay under the bed?
No. The cupboard and the open unit are both on castors, so they roll out into the room when you need them and back under the bed when you don't. With them out, the space under the bed is free for a den or a reading corner.
Is there a version with a desk?
Yes. The Ullswater High Sleeper is the same design at 181.3cm high, with a desk, three drawers and a wardrobe underneath.
Which mattress does it need?
A standard UK single, 90cm by 190cm, no deeper than 15cm. The MemoryDream 15 is the one we'd put on it.
