The Highgate puts a full-height wardrobe, a 152cm desk and a run of shelves underneath the bed, so a small room stops being a compromise. Sleeping goes up, everything else goes underneath, and the floor stays clear.

It's finished in grey and white, which reads as older rather than childish, and it's built to take a European single mattress at 90 x 200cm, so there's an extra 10cm of length over a standard UK single. That matters more than it sounds once a child hits their teens.

The mattress isn't included. The guard rails are designed around one no deeper than 15cm, and that figure is a safety measurement, not a suggestion: a deeper mattress raises the sleeping surface and leaves less rail above it. The MemoryDream 15 is the one we'd put on it.

Room fit

The Highgate needs 205.2cm of wall and stands 97.8cm out from it, or 110cm including the ladder. It's 183.1cm high overall, so measure your ceiling where the bed will stand, especially if it slopes. Allow about 70cm between the top of the mattress and the ceiling for a younger child to sit up, and 80 to 90cm for a teenager.
