About the Tarn
The Tarn Shorty Bunk Bed is a compact bunk designed with smaller bedrooms and younger children in mind. It sleeps two on 70 x 160cm mattresses rather than full singles, so it takes up less floor space than a standard bunk bed and leaves more room to play. It's built in solid pine with a smooth lacquered finish, in natural or white, and it's backed by our 5-year guarantee.
The whole bed measures 166cm long, 81cm deep and 140cm high, and that lower height suits rooms with sloping ceilings too. Underbed storage drawers keep toys, bedding, clothes and everyday essentials tucked away, which helps a shared room stay tidy. For extra peace of mind, you can add the optional safety rail on this page.
The stacked design suits siblings sharing a room, and the shorter sleeping length makes a cosy bed for younger children. The top bunk is for children aged 6 and over. It arrives flat-packed in 2 boxes, or 3 with the safety rail. If you'd rather not build it yourself, add Professional Assembly on this page before checkout. The delivery team build it in the room you choose and take the packaging away, so the bed is ready to sleep in the day it arrives.
It takes two 70 x 160cm mattresses. That isn't the standard UK shorty size, so check the mattress measures 70 x 160cm before you buy. The top bunk mattress should be no deeper than 12cm. That figure is a safety measurement, not a suggestion: a deeper mattress raises the sleeping surface and leaves less rail above it. The bottom bunk isn't raised, so it can take a deeper mattress if you prefer. If you fit the optional safety rail to the bottom bunk, keep to 12cm there too. The mattresses aren't included, but can be added to your order. The British Made High-Density Shorty Mattress shown above is 70 x 160cm and 12cm deep, so it fits either bunk.

Room fit
The Tarn Shorty takes up 166cm by 81cm of floor, less than a standard bunk bed, plus room in front to open the drawers. At 140cm high it suits rooms with lower or sloping ceilings. Measure your ceiling where the bed will stand, and allow about 70cm between the top mattress and the ceiling for a younger child to sit up.
Questions parents ask
What size mattresses does it take?
Two 70 x 160cm mattresses, with the one on the top bunk no deeper than 12cm. That isn't the standard UK shorty size, so check the mattress measures 70 x 160cm before you buy.
Is there any storage?
Yes. Underbed storage drawers hold toys, bedding, clothes and everyday essentials.
What age is it for?
The top bunk is for children aged 6 and over. With its shorter 160cm sleeping length, the bed is designed with younger children in mind.
Can the ladder go on either side?
Yes, the ladder can be positioned on either the right or the left-hand side when building the bed.
Can the bottom bunk take a deeper mattress?
Yes. The depth limit is there for the guard rails on the top bunk. The bottom bunk isn't raised, so a deeper mattress is fine if you'd like more comfort. A deeper mattress does take a little headroom from the space under the top bunk. If you fit the optional safety rail to the bottom bunk, keep to 12cm there too.
