Discovery Bunk Bed

The Discovery Bunk Bed takes Mathy's car-shaped Discovery bed and adds a second bunk above it. The lower bunk sits close to the floor with high sides, a cosy spot for a younger child, and the high-sided top bunk is for children aged 6 and over.

Add the pull-out bed and it sleeps three: the bunk sits a little higher, and a third bed on castors slides out from underneath for sleepovers.

It's handmade to order in Belgium by Mathy by Bols, designed by Coralie Revaud, in solid pine and MDF from PEFC-certified wood. The pine is finished in a natural varnish and the MDF is lacquered by hand in your choice of 26 colours, in water-based lacquer that meets EN 71-3, the European toy safety standard for paint. A matching touch-up stick comes with the bed.

The top bunk is for children aged 6 and over. Because it's made for your order, allow 3 to 4 weeks for delivery. It can't be returned as a change of mind, but faults and damage are covered in full. It comes ready for self-assembly.

Both bunks take the same size of mattress, to match the size you order: UK singles (90cm by 190cm) or small doubles (120cm by 190cm), on the two roll-up slatted bases that come with the bed. The bottom bunk isn't raised, so it can take a deeper mattress if you prefer. The pull-out bed takes a 90cm by 180cm mattress, no deeper than 12cm. Mattresses aren't included.

Room fit

The Discovery Bunk Bed takes 228cm of wall and comes 100cm out from it (130cm for the small double), a little longer than a standard single. It's 150cm high, or 161cm with the pull-out bed, so it suits most rooms; with the pull-out bed open, leave about a metre clear beside it.

Which side does the ladder go on?
Either. You choose left or right when you put the bed together, so it can suit your room.

What mattress does the pull-out bed take?
A 90 x 180cm mattress, no deeper than 12cm.

Can I choose any colour?
Yes. All 26 colours are listed on this page, at the same price. If you'd like to see a colour sample first, just ask.

Can the bottom bunk take a deeper mattress?
Yes. The bottom bunk isn't raised, so a deeper mattress is fine if you'd like more comfort. A deeper mattress does take a little headroom from the space under the top bunk, and leaves a little less of the lower bunk's high sides above the mattress.
