About the Winchester
The Winchester is a first raised bed. It sits at mid height, low enough that a six-year-old climbs it without a second thought and a parent can still reach in to make it, and it puts a desk, a chest of drawers and a storage unit in the space underneath. The whole thing lives in the footprint of a single bed until the desk comes out.
The desk is on castors. It pulls out sideways when there's homework or drawing to do and slides back under the bed when there isn't, so a room that can't fit a separate desk gets one anyway. Beside it, a three-drawer chest and a cube storage unit, both free-standing, so they can go under the bed as pictured or anywhere else the room allows. The ladder builds on the left or the right, and the storage swaps sides with it, which means the bed can be assembled as a mirror image of the photograph to suit where the door and the window are.
The frame is solid Scandinavian pine, with MDF for the panels and drawer bases, and it comes in white or a light grey. Wide, flat ladder steps rather than round rungs. The grey is light enough to work with any bedding and neutral enough to still look right when the child is fourteen. It's designed to meet BS EN 747, the British standard for raised beds, and the top is for children aged six and over.
Takes a standard UK single mattress, 90 x 190cm, no deeper than 15cm. That depth is a safety limit, not a fit limit: the guard rail is designed around a mattress up to 15cm, and a deeper one lifts the child and leaves less rail. The 15cm mattresses shown above are made for it.
It arrives flat-packed for self-assembly. Allow two adults and a couple of hours. If you'd rather not build it yourself, add Professional Assembly on this page before checkout. The delivery team build it in the room you choose and take the packaging away, so the bed is ready to sleep in the day it arrives.

Room fit
The Winchester takes 198cm of wall and 109cm of floor out from the wall with the desk pushed in. With the desk out it needs 183cm, so leave room in front of the bed for the desk and a chair. At 109cm high it suits most bedrooms, including ones with lower ceilings, but measure where it will stand and allow about 70cm between the top of the mattress and the ceiling for a younger child to sit up.
Questions parents ask
Does the desk have to stay under the bed?
No. It's on castors, so it pulls out sideways for homework and slides back under the bed when it isn't needed. Allow 183cm of floor out from the wall with the desk pulled out.
Can the ladder go on either side?
Yes. The ladder builds on the left or the right, and the chest and storage unit move with it, so decide which side it goes before you start.
Which mattress does it need?
A standard UK single, 90cm by 190cm, no deeper than 15cm. The 15cm mattresses shown above are made for it.
