The Chelsea is a whole bedroom in one frame, built for a teenager who's still growing. A raised continental single on top, and underneath it a desk that runs the full depth of the bed with shelving above, a sofa that pulls out into a second bed, and a lift-lid storage box at the end.

Two things set it apart from our other high sleepers. It takes a continental single, 90 by 200cm, 10cm longer than a standard UK single, so it's still the right length at fifteen. And the ladder runs straight up the front rather than leaning out into the room, so the whole bed is only 105cm deep with the ladder included. In a narrow bedroom that's the difference between fitting and not.

Under the bed there's 142.5cm of clear height. The desk is 88cm wide and 94.5cm from front to back, far bigger than most children's desks, with a three-shelf unit above it for books, folders and a lamp. Beside it sits the sofa: a seat most of the time, and when friends stay, the base pulls out and the cushions lay flat to make a bed about 177cm long, which suits children and most teenagers. Under the ladder, a lift-lid storage box takes spare bedding, toys or anything you'd rather not see.

In cashmere, a warm soft off-white that works in a child's room now and a teenager's later. If you'd rather not build it yourself, add professional assembly at checkout. The Chelsea takes a continental single mattress, 90 by 200cm. A standard UK single is 10cm too short and leaves a gap at the end, so check the size before you order.
