The MemoryDream 15 is our recommended mattress for children's and teenagers' beds. It's built in three layers: 2.5cm of high-density memory foam on top, a 2.5cm reflex foam layer beneath it, and a 10cm supportive base. The top moulds to the child and eases pressure at the hips and shoulders, and the base holds their back straight. It feels soft to lie on and firm to sleep on, which is why it comes out medium-firm.

It's 15cm deep, the maximum most raised beds allow, so it fits bunk beds, high sleepers, mid sleepers and cabin beds with the full guard-rail height above it, and it's just as right on a standard single or day bed. That depth matters on a raised bed. The guard rail is designed around a mattress no deeper than 15cm, and a deeper one lifts the child and leaves less rail. The MemoryDream keeps the rail where it should be.

There are no springs in it, so there's nothing to creak when a child turns over on a top bunk, and the foam absorbs movement rather than passing it on. It's made in the UK, tested to BS 7177 by an independent UKAS-accredited laboratory, and the cover comes off and goes in the wash.

It arrives vacuum-packed in a box that fits through a doorway and up a staircase. Unroll it, give it time to expand, and it's ready.
